Blender: Tupac Is Most Overrated Rapper
September 4, 2008 by OGhiphop
via Reuters…
Dead rapper Tupac “2Pac“ Shakur, the hip-hop icon who sold more records after he was murdered than during his brief career, is the most overrated person in music, according to music magazine Blender.
Shakur tops a tongue-in-cheek list that also includes “places, trends and other junk in rock,” Blender said in its upcoming October issue, due on newsstands next week. Other overrated finalists included the Grammys at No. 7, encores at No. 12, Pink Floyd at No. 14 and “the music you loved as a teenager” at No. 23…
It’s not the first time the pages of Blender have been used to bring down Shakur a few notches. In its June issue, rapper Lil Wayne listed him among his top five rappers, but then admitted: “I can’t front: I was never into Pac…”
Before everyone gets all rowdy about this, keep in mind that Blender did this to SELL MAGAZINES. People will pick up a copy of a magazine when it says something as controversial as Tupac and Pink Floyd are overrated musicians (neither of which are true in my book).

I co-sign with Blender. I’m not hating on Pac - he has skills - but the mythology doesn’t match the catalog.
As an icon, maybe. As an artist, MC or rapper? No.
Turn the clock back 12 years to all eyes on me. One of the best cds ever. Not saying hes the greatest rapper ever, but is amongst the best. How can you say hes over rated when hes outselling new rappers 12 years after he died? You think someones great now days cause the come out with a nursery rhyme you can dance to, but with absolutely no meaning. He killed everyone that was on the mic at that time. Everyone. How about this, Lil wayne, T.I., 50, Rick Ross, and about fifty others that are so over rated they wouldnt vote themselves as one of the best out there.
Not fair man…. you can’t hold tupac down because his material was way different from the others …it’s only a mather of tast and i’m pretty sure that tupac new what he was doing back in the studio (no metphore) so what ? Lil wayne metaphore now are about strawberry cake pottato chips and all the kind of buuullll man .Uno Tupac is dead pink floyd is not so there’s a big diffence here and two everybody seems to love lil wayne and i don’t , so wether you like him or not i think is not fair to talk for everybody ,you mitgh make a list of your top 5 best rappers and i mitgh not agree with the rappers you set on your list vice versa …. Is tupac overated ?You think he is ,I think he’s not..
I agree with them almost about pac
eazy, and LL Cool J are more overrated though.Eazy hired writers and LL Cool J hasnt been good since like 96′ or so.The beatles are more overrated than Pink Floyd so take floyd off and put The Beatles there and if they want to put a rapper there put eazy-e there.
I see eazy-e way to high on peoples list ice cube was way better than eazy ever was.To many idiots think that eazy-e is one of the 3 best and pacs vocab was so simple a 3rd grader could get it.Pac is way to simple and had a generic flow to me 1 he is like 7 or 8 on my greatest rapper list.On my greatest band/artist list 2pac barley makes the cut at like 97 or so.
But there bringing up lil wayne! Lil wayne sucks he is one of the worst famous rappers in the world
I have to agree with Chris on the Beatles comment. They are heralded as THE best band to ever hold a guitar and some drum sticks but they weren’t. I don’t think Tupac is overrated. I think he deserves to be in the top 10 to top 20 rappers of all time based on his influence as well as his aesthetic contributions to rap music. The main issue is judging whether or not he is overrated by asking whether or not he deserves the accolades he gets from press and hip-hop heads. I think he definitely deserves it. He may not be the “best rapper of all time” as some of his die-hard fans may claim, but he isn’t overrated.
OGhiphop-Yeah I feel you but its mostley those casual fans that overrated 2pac,most hip-hop heads will tell you diffrent though.Like I usually say rakim and no one disagrees with me on a website with almost strictly hip-hop heads. Now if I go on topix witch more of the casuals will go to if I dont put 2pac at #1 I get a million people jumping on me like weres pac hes the greatest ever wtf? why aint he 1 who is rakim and all that.Look he has 2 classic albums in reaity and his first 2 albums almost sucked. All eyez on me was almost completly filler and the 2nd disc was a joke.Overral when I rank pac at even 8 I feel like im being generous.he would have got wrecked in a battle by canibus or loe louis (detroit underground dude amazing battle rapper) and he didnt use metaphors or similies. But the diehards are the worst cause they always act like that pac is 1 and is untouchable and all that but pac was never on ice cubes level ice was the greatest rapper in the world from straight outta compton till the predator.
on to the beatles,I like the beatles and revolver is one of my favorite albums but come on people while they are arguably the greatest band of all time but with the beatles they couldve did whatever they wanted on a album and it wouldnt have mattered whatosever critics wouldve called it one of the greatest albums of all time that was just how it was. That is overrated and 2pac is just that he had 2 wack albums that never get talked about and people give all eyez on me way more props than that piece of junk deserved.Therefor from a music perspective 2pac is highly overrated “me against the world” is a classic and “don killmaniti:the 7 day theory” was classic but still overrated but a nice album.
I actually take back my lil wayne comment but only to a degree. At this point he sucks but c1 is actually very good and c2 was decent but lights out and c3 are some of the worst crap I’ve ever heard.
But yall bringing up “all eyez on me” that was almost wack “me against the world” was his only cd that is even top 25 in hip-hop thats it .True hip-hop heads dont base it on who is the most well known they will base it on pure music and skill. Now 2pac sells t-shirts sure but he aint the most skilled rapper ever, look at nas and what he did and you cant compare pac and nas.Nas has Illmatic, gods son,it was written, and stillmatic to back him up as a better rapper than 2pac could ever dream of being.
Please pac overrated chris is right pac aint on ice cube or nas level pac almost sucked he aint top 50 to me.I like me against the world and thats actually about it thats all he really had biggy got a pair of classics and only a pair of albums and big l woulda crushed him in battle.eminem way better to he got 3 classics and 4 albums and slim shady ep was dope to I take prodigy or treach anyday over pac hands down.I would say don killumanti sucked balls and all eyez on me sucked and them first 2 are not even comment worthy.Nas spits science thats my dude goat fck pac and his stans nas is gods son pac is a fake-gangsta hoe he aint deep immortal technique the revoloultion vol.2 thats deep thats real not no 2pacalypse now pac was a clown to entertain us like ODB with slightly more skills. He was alright but he was pretty much shock gs hypeman until he started actin thug and when he died thats when it really got outta hand with the stans and all that.
Pac is the most overrated rapper of all time hands down.
Pac isnt top 10 much less the very best.Pac in reality is about on the same level as Dmx.Top 30 but calling him the greatest if fcking nuts and then to say its undisputable is stupid.2pac was pretty good but the term overrated fits 2pac because usually you have to be good before people can overrated you.If MC Hammer would’ve got shot down no one would’ve really started overrateing him it just so happens 2pac had an once of talent for people to overrate. But I dont know how you could think “all eyez on me” was a great CD it was a joke and was 90% filler.2pac had a wack generic flow 2.
Now nas is probably the greatest.Best lyricist and he has Illmatic, stillmatic,it was written, and gods son under his belt so I think we should give nas the props he deserves as the greatest.2pac does not deserve the attention he gets now from fans and some media outlets.
Most overrated artist of all time I dont think so.Maybe Elvis or The beatles but 2pac is up there with them. They were all good just damn people overrate the hell out of them.2pac was a revolutionary or anything like that he was a gangsta rapper end of story. If anyone can find a difrence between Dmx and 2pac than you might change my mind. There is no difrence at all and most people would rank Dmx like 27th or so.
So as a real head I don’t know what qualifications you have in Hip-Hop to say Pac wasn’t overrated, but as someone who has been Hip-Hop for 25 years or more I’m sick of hearing people who rate Pac as the greatest rapper ever!
I suspect most of these people are under 30 probably never listened to Hip-Hop before the 90’s and maybe only got exposed to it during the period where the West Coast grew in dominance!
As for me, 2Pac wouldn’t make my top 100 MC’s, wouldn’t have a track make my top 1000 records, and believe me with over 7000 records in my collection and over 85% of it Hip-Hop that says something for an artist people to claim is the best!
So what does anyone think he brought to Hip-hop over than a controversial lifestyle? If you quote sales figures that means didily as some of the most unoriginal pop garbage sells, i’m sure a million guitarists have sold more than Hendrix, but ask any of them guitarists whether they would rate themselves higher than the man himself, I think not!
What new style did Pac bring, what skills on the mic none, what great beats did he rhyme over none, and I don’t speak for myself anyone I know that has lived through as much Hip-Hop and been actively involved, not just buy the music but create it have all said the same thing!
It’s just about time some of the music industry, media monkeys stood up and spoke up for real Hip-hop, represent the true geniuses on the mic like the Rakims, KRS1’s, Pharoahe Monche’s, Big L’s, Nas the list goes on of people that have created and moved the art-form forward not backwards like some of the west coast players who used the music to just line their pockets!
Most artist produce their classic material in their early days when their ideas are fresh, 2pac took a few LP’s until he hooked up with Dre an old timer to produce his best work, that still didn’t innovate!
And as for the Beatles being overrated I think not, they were a group that pioneered music more than a 2Pac ever did, sounds like you need to learn your history!
yeah, interesting, how the opinions change as i scroll down the page. At first there were people who were giving pac love but as i went down the page i’m like damn! I mean it’s almost as if ya’ll hate the man! to the guy who name dropped four nas albums, illmatic’s the only good one there and stillmatic’s kind of ok. I love pac, I love nas, ice cube, eminem, dr. dre, public enemy, wutang, of course Run DMC, and the list goes on. But Pac is the only one an my opinion who can make me feel, or complement my feelings at any given moment perfectly. Sure you got DMX or Ice Cube’s snarling rap, you got dr dre’s solid chunky beats, eminem’s witand the skillful rhyme play of the old school pioneers; but with pac, I mean when I’m angry, he’s got hit em up or komrads, when I’m feeling proud i just put in all eyez on me, when I wanna make an entrance it’s hailmary, and so on. I mean the man, had yes simple word play, but since when did someone care about the wrapping instead of the actual present. You get what I’m saying, his rhymes were simple, but efficient, i mean it’s still rhythm and poetry. when did it become a rule that rappers should have the most da vinci-esque rhymes ever composed? I reckon the man should be well among the top 10. And for all those who are in blissful ignorance, pac was at his prime in ‘96, his death not exalt his status as an already capable rapper. He has achieved a legendary status since his death, but that is because so many more songs have also been released since his death, and they still keep coming out. As for lil wayne, the jackass can’t rap, and he isn’t even dirt on Pac’s boots, so how is he to comment on pac, and ya’ll just take that retards word for granted, nodding your heads in agreement like dumb aristocrats. Peace out boys and girls
agree wit dude above me, ya’ll started wit da luv ended wit da hate, pacs a great rapper, not the greatest but a great. wen u think of the 2 most influencial rappers its big or pac, u cant think of big without thinkin of pac, his lifestyle was even intrestin, talkin bout how hes gonna die how he seen it commin not knowin wen. like his music was attractive, made u just wanna hear more
and take this in
would u rather listen to music wit basic word play n complexed meaning
or complexed word play n basic meanings?
“he never care, he was only there, to make sure, i aint drop a dime, bout the crimes, hes committin on the poor” simple but thats just the type of music u listen 2, like its meaning full
top of it, pac was a young nigga wen he came n left the game. his music stil out sells current date rappers
aint sayin dude was da best, buh wen u think of hip hop u think of him, n its like that for a reason. far from overrated, underrated if anything seeing how his first albums didnt blow
