Houston Remembers Pimp C One Year Later

David Banner, Bun B, DJ Paul and others will help pay homage to the late UGK rapper Pimp C by speaking with Houston radio station KPFT on the one year anniversary of his death.

Taking time to reflect on the Southern-bred emcee’s contributions to hip-hop, radio personality Matt Sonzala will run his evening program remembering C’s legacy.

“Pimp C was a leader,” Sonzala said in a statement. “He was a man respected cuz he built his own lane and stayed in it and dominated it. He and Bun B are the backbone of this southern rap movement.”

While artists like Big Gipp and Mama Wes will also join the broadcast by visiting the station and calling in, the host will secure C’s memory by requiring strict guidelines.

“This time around though, the studio is closed to anyone not invited,” he added. “We want to make this serious and can’t have just anyone coming down f*cking with the vibe. This is for Pimp C and this is how we do it.”

Listeners will be able to call in and possibly receive air time by calling 713.526.KPFT
The live Pimp C tribute show will run Thursday, December 4 from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. CST

Weezer Hates Asher Roth

November 30, 2008 by Carsten · Leave a Comment

“Okay, maybe i’m exaggerating a little bit. Let me explain.
As I was avoiding my grandparents during post Turkey eating festivities yesterday, I hit up Myspace to see how many groupies we’re hurting for a squirting. I was very happy to see that the homie Asher Roth was featured on the front page of MySpace, promoting his single ‘I Love College’. Naturally I clicked the link just for kicks, to be surprised by hearing a new rendition of said track. The infamous Weezer sample, that many stated made the song what it was, has now been replaced from the original track. A new version of the beat, of equal or greater dopeness, has been stuck in where Weezer’s guitars once were. Baffled, I hit the internets to do some research.
Scooter Braun informed me that after approaching Weezer to clear the sample, the band denied all requests, no matter what was offered. Publishing, money, everything. ‘No, no, no’ said the band. This struck me by surpise. Why would a band deny money over a sample? Especially a band like Weezer who is known for being open to many different styles?
It was then brought to my attention that Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of Weezer, had previously asked fans to “help” him work on music for the band. So this guy has the gall to refuse to let other people use his music, even for money, yet previously has asked for others work? Can someone explain to me how that makes sense?
I’m not sure if Weezer hates Asher Roth, hip-hop, sampling, or what. I do know that they made a big mistake. Pardon my rambling, I just felt like expressing my thoughts to you, reader.”

Skillz remembers Kanye

“So Im in Amsterdam and I’m bored as shit cuz its freezing rain outside and I’m listening to beats and what not outta the laptop and I had my instrumental folder on shuffle and I hear a beat I never heard before. I usually know what’s in my ipod( cuz its mine right?) and for some reason its baffling me that I don’t remember where this beat is from. Then it hits me, Its Kanye’s. Then I sit at my laptop and start going thru my library. Now I’ve paid attention to what he’s produced and what he’s put out on his own. From Game to Cons to GLC to Alicia Keys to 88 Keys and to this day I have never heard anyone spit over this track. Why do I even still have it? So I hit the net and do a few more searches and the only thing I haven’t listened to is 808’s. Im sure this beat wouldn’t be on that album. So I come across a MTV blurb where this girl is talking about Ye and how he used to hang at MTV and how he always talked about music and his beats and what not. So that took me back to when I first met him. I was signed to Rawkus and from what I hear they had the chance to sign him and passed on him but shit those dudes passed on Eminem! Well it was a guy there named Howie, I still don’t remember what his title was but he was the one STREET cat that Rawkus had. He knew all the people who for the most part wouldn’t support Rawkus’s music but some how he got them to listen and sometimes play it. So once I got signed I remember he would always ask what VA was like. Yall got hoods down there? Do the Clipse really move white? All kinds of shit, but he was cool( then). Dude used to get head in the office and all kinds of wild shit. So one day he tells me he wants to take me over Kanye’s crib to get some beats. Im like ” Who’s Kanye’? He’s like That Mos’s man. He got some shit. So then on the way to Hoboken he tells me the songs he did and how he’s not really like Jay and them but Jay & then dont fuck with him outside tracks. So I’m like ” Oh, from the Chi, he did H to The Izzo! I remember him from the video showing off his tattoo( for some reason that image was the only one I had). So we get there. An Apartment building and he’s sitting in front of a Roland 1680. A hard disk recorder. I had the same one I had let my man E borrow it. He had headphones on and was doing something with the machine. The apartment had records, sneakers, you know the usual shit. He asked me what kind of shit was I looking for and I told him what I tell every producer …” I don’t know, I just know it when I hear it.” So he played like 20 beats and I only really liked four. They all had samples in em and most of em where those sped up soul joints he used to do back in the day. Anyway he talked about music and this new Hov shit and mostly it was him and Howie talking. I wasnt saying much I was just chilling and cold..the heat wasnt on. Now I aint saying he didnt pay the bill..lol. Im just saying it was cold. So he burns the cd and we get ready to bounce and we’re walking to the door and he says my name ..
ye- Skillz
me- Huh
ye- Can I ask you a favor ,yo?
me- What up?
ye- If you decide to not use any of the beats please don’t rap over em and put em on a mixtape or nothing.
me- Oh! iiight
Ye- I’m for real
me- ummmm..ok

“A Judge in Illinois ordered a hip-hop fan who had violated noise levels to endure 20-hours of compositions by Beethoven.

Andrew Vactor was fined $150 after he persisted in playing his favourite hip-hop music at loud volumes through his car stereo.

But Champaign County Municipal Court Judge Susan Fornof-Lippencott promised to cut the fine to $35 if Vactor agreed to broaden his musical horizons…”

After a Decade of Chaos, Has the Record Industry Finally Hit Upon the Right New Business Model?

October 6, 2008 by OGhiphop · Leave a Comment

via Economist

Not necessarily hip-hop related, but figured a lot of you would be interested in the latest hustles of the music industry.  This is from one of the illest news publications in the world, The Economist.

“…Now, seven years after Apple’s appearance on the scene, and with global markets once again in turmoil, the industry may have found a way to square these conflicting demands: hiding the cost of a music subscription inside something else. The best example for this approach is Nokia’s Comes With Music (CWM) model. Buy a CWM handset and you get free, unlimited music downloads for a year. Of course, they aren’t really free: the price of the handset includes a subscription fee that is passed to the record companies (see article). After a year, you can pay to continue to download new tunes, or you can buy another CWM handset, with another year of free service. Thus consumers get their music; record companies get paid; and Nokia attracts and retains customers.

This idea can be extended beyond handsets. “Free” music can also be bundled with mobile-phone contracts, broadband service, music-players, PCs or even cars. Firms that provide these things may be prepared to chip in towards the cost of the music service in return for customer loyalty. Whether all this will prove to be a sustainable new model for the industry remains unclear: a lot depends on how the different companies involved divide up the costs and benefits.

Like Apple before it, Nokia is venturing outside its market and taking on a powerful incumbent. As with Apple seven years ago, many observers are sceptical. But the unpleasant truth is that these days many people, particularly young people, expect music to be free. The industry may finally have found a way to sustain this illusion while still getting paid…”
