Pretty cool that he stepped up and did this. He truly sounds sorry and his articulation of the situation makes it sound like there is something deeper lying beneath his heat of the moment actions. Jay Leno pushes a bit hard by bringing Kanye’s late mother into the topic; that was a low blow but good for Kanye and good damage control by whoever his publicist is! My girl over at Closet Ambitions put some thoughts down on the dope fashion behind the video for “Run This Town,” which she aptly points out, also features three of the more influential artists in fashion (Jay-Z, Kanye, Rihanna). Joiji highlights some interesting fashion trends that can be spotted in the video; Jay may or may not “bring back Versace shades,” but I personally think Jay will bring back the “all black everything.” Rihanna’s outfits both capture the essence of the freedom-fighter theme while maintaining her air as a rising R&B diva bad-ass.

In the video there are a couple of themes and sartorial choices going on that are worth noting:

The urban warfare imagery and the military trend is in full force, although you can see that the video’s take on this trend is more guerilla than regimented.

There is a sense of uniformity that is reinforced by the all-black wardrobe of the cast. Much like the army of stylists, publicists, and hair and makeup artists behind the scenes at fashion week, the supporting cast members are dressed entirely in head-to-toe black, following Jay-Z’s orders to ”Get y’all black tees on/All black everything.”

Anonymity is also a prevailing theme mostly achieved through accessorizing. Impenetrable accessories including black sunglasses, hats worn low and bandanas are used to mask and protect.

Play this back in 3 months and see how much of what’s going on in the video is reflected by what you see around you (and more than likely in other videos).

Wow some interesting news right here. Cherry Beach Sound (a recording studio) sent over this info on a recent session Drake had in their studio. Ghostwriting for Jeezy? Rihanna and Jay-Z on the album?

“This week we welcomed back Toronto rapper/actor Drake to our studio for the recording of several tracks for his upcoming album project, Thank Me Later. One of the tracks included a song Drake wrote for American rapper Young Jeezy. Also in the studio with Drake was engineer, producer, and production manager Noah “40” Shebib. “40” has worked with Drake on his February 2009 released mixtape, So Far Gone, which received 8,000 downloads within its first two hours of release.

Noah “40” Shebib is known has one of Canada’s best hip hop and r&b engineers/producers. He has worked with artists such as Divine Brown, Saukrates, K-OS, Fefe Dobson, Drake, JDiggz, Nelly Furtado, Billy Talent, Fito Blanko, Trey Songz, Nate Dogg, George Nozuka, Little Brother, and many more.

ATF Records recording artist Drake is best known for his role as Jimmy Brooks on CTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation. His first single, Best I Ever Had, featured on So Far Gone has hit the charts on Billboard’s Hot 100. Drake has worked with artists such as Robin Thicke, Lil’ Wayne, Trey Songz, and Little Brother.
